Neuro Intensive Care Unit Is Officially Open!
November 11, 2009 — The Penn Neuro Intensive Care Unit offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to caring for patients with several neurological injuries. The Penn Neuro ICU is part of the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center of the University of Pennsylvania, a Level 1 trauma center, certified stroke center and acute brain injury center.
This distinguished unit is among the most technologically sophisticated Neurocritical Care units in the nation, and is the only academic facility of its kind in the region.
The center is staffed by a team of expert clinicians in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, anesthesiology, nursing, nutrition, pharmacology, physical therapy and social work. Physicians and nurses set the standard for care in the region and are leaders in advancing the field through research and patient care.
In recognition of its lifesaving efforts, the Neuro Intensive Care Unit was awarded the prestigious AACN Circle of Excellence Award for Collaboration and Teamwork in 2008, the AACN Beacon Award for Excellence in Critical Care in 2008 and 2009 by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
The unit is located on the second floor of the Rhoads Building at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
The unit has 22 critical care beds with state-of-the-art technology that optimizes patient safety and care. The patient-centered design incorporates enhanced patient visibility and provider workflow as well as cutting-edge technology to monitor the brain.
