Research
Both across the nation
and here at Penn, research focuses on understanding
the causes of epilepsy. Particular interests include
identifying genes that are responsible for certain
types of epilepsy, understanding the relationship
between perinatal injury and seizures, analyzing
how seizure activity starts and spreads in the
brain, and learning how brain trauma or stroke
can cause epilepsy.
New advances in understanding the causes of epilepsy
can lead to the development of new medicines to
stop seizures. Identifying genes that cause seizures
can be used to aid in genetic counseling.
