Imaging Studies
At the Penn Epilepsy Center,
high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
is performed with the highest strength magnet
available for clinical studies. In addition, metabolic
studies are performed with positron
emission tomography (PET) and single
photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to evaluate blood flow patterns.
Ongoing clinical research by Dr.
John A. Detre and colleagues in the area of
functional MRI helps localize areas of the brain
that control memory, language, and motor and visual
functions. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy can
analyze the chemical composition of different
areas of the brain, which helps to determine where
seizures originate.
