The Center for Brain Injury and Repair
Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of
death and disability in the United States. If
often affects people in the prime of their lives.
The Center for Brain Injury and Repair is the longest standing
and most respected center for head injury in the
U.S. For greater than 30 years, scientists, engineers
and clinicians have collaborated to study the
causes, effects and management of traumatic brain
injury, both in the laboratory and in the patient
care setting. The Center is internationally renown
and the close collaboration between scientists
and clinicians from many disciplines ensures that
the latest and most innovative management strategies
are provided to patients with these devastating
injuries.
Patients with head injury are cared for by a
multidisciplinary team including emergency room
physicians, neurosurgeons, neuro-intensivists,
trauma and critical care surgeons, neuroanesthesiologists
and neurocritical care nurses using state-of-the-art
diagnostic, resuscitative, surgical, ICU, monitoring
and rehabilitation techniques. Support is provided
by physicians from otolaryngology, neuro-ophthalmalogy,
plastic surgery and rehabilitation medicine. Physical
therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists,
dietitians and social workers help in each patient’s
recovery.
The Center also provides evaluation and treatment
for patients who have previous injuries and require
reconstructive surgery, repair of cerebrospinal
fluid leakage, correction of hydrocephalus and
other treatments.
Clinicians in the Center for Brain Injury and Repair use a multidisciplinary
approach to maximize patient outcome:
- PENNSTAR,
24 hour emergency air transport service
- Rapid resuscitation and evaluation
- State-of-the-art neuroimaging
- Advanced neuro-anesthetic techniques
- Advanced neuro-surgical techniques
- Innovative neuro-monitoring and comprehensive
critical care to prevent secondary cerebral
insults
- Dedicated neurotrauma intensive care unit
