Penn’s Renal-Electrolyte and Hypertension Division has a 75-year history of excellence in patient care, teaching and research.
We are proud of the compassionate, patient-centered care that our clinical team delivers for the entire spectrum of kidney and hypertension disorders. Beyond our large general nephrology practice, Penn’s kidney medicine program has grown to include expert clinics for diagnosis and treatment of glomerular diseases, lupus kidney disease, kidney stone disease, polycystic kidney disease, complex hypertension, and neuroendocrine tumors. We have the oldest and largest kidney and pancreas transplantation program in the region, one that has achieved among the best transplant outcomes in the nation. Our nephrology consult services provide advanced care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Presbyterian-Penn Medical Center, and the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. And we care for more than 600 dialysis outpatients, many of whom receive dialysis care in the home.
The Renal Division has a diverse research portfolio that includes clinical, epidemiology, bench and translational science. Our scientists include national and international leaders in their fields, whose exciting research interests span investigations of the molecular basis of kidney development and disease, the epidemiology of kidney transplantation and chronic kidney disease, and innovative clinical trials.
Within the stimulating academic environment created by this clinical and research work, the Division maintains exciting Nephrology Fellowship programs that attract outstanding trainees for clinical and research training and that has graduated generations of nephrologists that have gone on to become leaders of American nephrology.
