PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL

Founded in 1751, our nation's first hospital is renowned as a cutting-edge, approximately 500-bed acute care facility. Providing a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical services, Pennsylvania Hospital functions as a major teaching and clinical research institution.

Located in the beautiful and historic Society Hill section of Philadelphia, this hospital attracts some of the most gifted and well-respected medical providers who, along with our nursing, allied health, and other professionals, are considered to be among the best in the world. Working here, you will find an environment that, while academic, has the camaraderie and friendliness of a smaller, community hospital.

Since its founding, Pennsylvania Hospital has been an innovator in patient care, treatment techniques and medical research and has provided the setting for many "firsts" of our nation. In the tradition of Dr. Benjamin Rush, known as the “father of American psychiatry,” Pennsylvania Hospital continues to be at the forefront of medical breakthroughs in the treatment of mental disease.

Today, Hall-Mercer Community Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center provides a range of services for children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness. As the first outpatient community mental health and mental retardation center in the state of Pennsylvania, Hall-Mercer Center distinguishes itself from other community-based services through its affiliation with Pennsylvania Hospital.

Pennsylvania Hospital enjoys a national reputation in areas such as:

Home to specialty treatment centers such as the Joan Karnell Cancer Center, the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery and the Penn Neurological Institute, U.S.News & World Report ranked Pennsylvania Hospital among the nation's leaders for orthopaedics and urology.
