Summer Teen Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The Summer Teen Program is designed to expose students interested in healthcare access to the operations of a world-class medical center. Volunteers will have a chance to interact with patients, observe clinicians and support hospital staff.

You Would Make a Good Volunteer If You...
  • Are mature and willing to adhere to hospital policies and procedures
  • Interested in helping care for patients by assisting hospital staff and operations
  • Are 14 to 19 years old
  • Have a professional and positive attitude about your commitment to the hospital, its patients and visitors
  • Can commit to eight 5-hour shifts of scheduled volunteering over a 9-week period, excluding holidays from June 29 - August 30
  • Attend one day of hospital training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at one of the following times:
    • June 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
    • June 11, 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
    • June 14, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
    • June 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
What We Offer

What We Do Not Provide
  • Shadowing opportunities
  • Reimbursement for costs associated with the volunteer application process
  • Medical or clinical training
  • Course credits or internships
What We Require
  • Commitment to a minimum of eight 5-hour shift over a 9-week period, excluding holidays from June 29-August 30
  • Application, letter of academic recommendation, immunization/vaccination records, completion of health system orientation including competency exam
  • On-site orientation prior to start date
  • Must be 14 to 18 years of age and enrolled in an accredited high school for the 2013/14 academic year.
  • $15 for a volunteer jacket, which will be yours to keep.
What Assignments Are Available?
  • Assignments consist primarily of clerical, administrative, and logistical tasks
  • Assignments descriptions will be made available prior to orientation.
When Should I Apply?
  • Applications for the Summer Session for June 29-August 30 will be accepted from April 21-May 23 or until all assignments have been filled
  • An application is not considered complete all documents included in the application packet have been received.
If I Complete An Application, Will I Be Accepted?
  • Due to space constraints, many more students apply than can be assigned a volunteer position
  • Assignments are distributed on a first-come, first served basis, the earlier an application is received and completed, the more likely an applicant is to move forward towards receiving an assignment at HUP
What Do I Need For Training and Orientation?
  • All applicants must visit the HUP ID Photo Center to receive their Penn ID. Teen Volunteers must sign-up for a scheduled day and time to have their photo ID taken.  See application packet for more information.
  • Accepted applicants must attend an orientation at HUP on one of the following days:
    • June 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
    • June 11, 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
    • June 14, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
    • June 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Accepted applicants will receive a competency exam at orientation to be completed no later than their schedule first shift

Due to the number of applications received, we cannot reply to every application. Only those that have been accepted will be notified of next steps.
