College Volunteer Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The program is designed to expose students interested in a career in clinical care to the operations of a world-class medical center. Volunteers will have a chance to interact with patients, observe clinicians and support hospital staff.

You Would Make a Good Volunteer If You...
  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in a medical field
  • Are mature and willing to adhere to hospital policies and procedures
  • Have a professional and positive attitude about your commitment to the hospital, its patients and visitors
  • Are 18+ years old
What We Offer

  • Opportunity to gain a letter of recommendation for participation in an elite hospital program after completing 96 hours of service
What We Do Not Provide
  • Shadowing opportunities
  • Reimbursement for costs associated with the volunteer application process
  • Medical or clinical training
  • Course credits or internships
What We Require
  • Commitment to a minimum of 12 (4) hour shift over a 14-week period between February 1 - May 9
  • Attend one half day of hospital training prior to the start of volunteering. Dates of training are to be determined
  • Complete on-line training modules as required
  • Ability to make two or more scheduled trips to HUP during the orientation process
  • Application, evaluations from academic advisors, immunization/vaccination records
  • During flu season, all volunteers are required to receive a flu vaccination between September and December. HUP will offer the vaccination free of charge.
What Assignments Are Available?
  • Please review a sample of assignments that may be available
  • Assignments will be selected on a first-come, first served basis after the application process has closed
When Should I Apply?
  • Applications for the Fall Session will be accepted from July 14–August 15 or until a sufficient number of applications have been received
  • An application is not considered complete until all of the following have been received:
    • On-line application
    • Immunization & TB screening form
      • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
      • Varicella (chickenpox)
      • Tuberculosis (PPD test or equivalent)
  • Two Skill Surveys returned by advisors, faculty mentors or supervisors
If I Complete An Application, Will I Be Accepted?
  • We will continue to process applications until all assignments have been distributed
  • Due to space constraints, many more students apply than can be assigned a volunteer position
What Do I Need For Training and Orientation?
  • On-line training is completed through Knowledge Link using your Penn ID. Applicants are required to complete five courses. Each course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
  • On-site orientation will take place at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. All volunteers must attend one session appropriate for the assignment
  • A positive and eager mind ready to learn about working in an academic medical center
