College Volunteer Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The program is designed to expose students interested in medical school to the operations of a world-class medical center. Volunteers will have a chance to interact with patients, observe clinicians and support hospital staff.

You Would Make a Good Volunteer If You...
  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in a medical field
  • Are mature and willing to adhere to hospital policies and procedures
  • Have a professional and positive attitude about your commitment to the hospital, its patients and visitors
  • Can commit to 12 (4) hour shifts of scheduled volunteering over a 13-week period, excluding holidays from May 25 - August 23
  • Attend one day of hospital training the week of May 18-24 prior to the start of volunteering

What We Do Not Provide
  • Shadowing opportunities
  • Reimbursement for costs associated with the volunteer application process
  • Medical or clinical training
  • Course credits or internships
What We Require
  • Commitment to a minimum of 12 (4) hour shift over a 13-week period between May 25 and August 23
  • Application, two letters of recommendation, immunization/vaccination records
  • On-line and on-site orientation prior to start date
  • Must be 18 years or older
What Assignments Are Available?
  • Please review the assignments found on the College Volunteer Assignments
  • Assignments are made by the Department of Volunteer Services according to an applicant's stated availability and interests
When Should I Apply?
  • Applications for the Summer Session from May 25-August 24 will be accepted from March 10- April 20 or until all assignments have been filled
  • An application is not considered complete until all of the following have been received:
    • On-line application
    • Immunization records
      • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
      • Varicella (chickenpox)
      • Tuberculosis (PPD test or equivalent)
      • Seasonal influenza (not needed for Summer Session)
    • Two (2) recommendations from a college advisors, faculty mentors or supervisors
If I Complete An Application, Will I Be Accepted?
  • Due to space constraints, many more students apply than can be assigned a volunteer position
  • Assignments are distributed on a first-come, first served basis, the earlier an application is received and completed, the more likely an applicant is to move forward towards receiving an assignment at HUP
What Do I Need For Training and Orientation?
  • All applicants must visit the HUP ID Photo Center to receive their Penn ID. The Penn ID is necessary to complete on-line training.
  • On-line training is completed through Knowledge Link using your Penn ID. Applicants are required to complete five courses prior to the day of orientation. Each course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
  • On-site orientation will take place at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. All volunteers must attend one of the following sessions:
    • May 18, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
    • May 20, 1-5 p.m.
    • May 22, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
    • May 24, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
