The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is not accepting applications for the Traditional Volunteer Program at this time. We are in a transition of leadership within our Volunteer Services Department. If you would like to apply, we will welcome all applications in January 2014.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. We believe the adult volunteers who work side-by-side with hospital personal are a valued treasure, often hard to find. The Volunteer Services Department's first priority is to find the appropriate assignment for you — one that is desired by you and fills a hospital need for assistance.
Volunteer assignments may exist in clinical and non-clinical locations of the hospital, including nursing units, Emergency Department, hospital offices, Guest Services, Information Desks and other hospitality locations, and the scope of potential assignments is unlimited.
The benefits of becoming a HUP Volunteer extend beyond your volunteer assignment. They include:
- Adult Volunteers are provided free parking in a hospital, parking garage. Volunteers must be able to produce a license and complete the minimum of a four (4) hour shift weekly
- A meal voucher for a meal in the hospital cafeteria (if you work a 4 hour shift or longer)
- Celebratory events, recognizing hospital volunteers
- While becoming a volunteer at HUP does not lead directly to employment at HUP or a UPHS entity, it does expose volunteer to health care related experience and valuable skills for future education and employment
- Completed application
- Letter of recommendation from a current or former employer
- Immunization record for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Chickenpox (MMR must be administered two times). If you were born on December 31, 1956 or before, it is not necessary to obtain these records
- Results of a PPD Test for Tuberculosis administered within three months prior to the volunteer's start date
- Commitment of 100 Hours of Volunteer service within a 12 month period of time
- Volunteer Services and Departmental Interview
- Attendance at Hospital Orientation
- Specific, hospital and departmental training
- Uniform and dress standards
- Punctuality and consistent attendance, accomplishing minimum service requirements
- For court-referred community service – appropriate documentation supporting the reason for community service and the name, address and telephone number of the probation officer at the time of the interview
After you submit the application, you will be contacted by the Volunteer Services Department to schedule an interview with a member of the Volunteer Services Team. During the interview, we will learn about your interests, activities, previous volunteer experiences, your preference for an assignment and availability.
Once an assignment is agreed upon, you will be invited to attend hospital orientation. This training/orientation is mandated by state law and hospital policy, and therefore, the training topics of Infection Control, Patient Confidentiality/HIPAA, and Fire/Safety, Age-specific competency, Customer Satisfaction, Cultural Diversity are required before working in the hospital.
