UPHS Patient Insurance: About Your Health Insurance

Important Announcement Regarding Horizon BCBS-NJ

Penn Medicine has reached an agreement with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield that ensures New Jersey subscribers will continue to have the right to choose Penn Medicine as an "in-network" option for health care without any interruption or changes to their insurance coverage.

This means both current and future patients covered by Horizon have continuing access to the advanced care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the only hospital in this region named in the top ten hospitals in the nation, according to US News and World Report, as well as Penn Medicine's Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and Pennsylvania Hospital.

For any Horizon subscriber who may have changed doctors during the last few months, you can still be referred to Penn Medicine and should ask your doctor about options for returning to Penn.

If you are a patient with questions, please call 800-789-PENN. If you are a referring physician and have inquiries, please call 215-313-6197.

Thank you for your patience during the past few months. Penn Medicine wants all patients to know that we are committed to working on your behalf to ensure that you have access to the most advanced medical care which means we will never stop finding ways to give patients their best hope.

I received a letter from Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey saying it terminated its contracts with the University of Pennsylvania hospitals. Does this contract change that?

The agreement that Penn Medicine recently reached restores the contract with Horizon keeping Penn patients in network.  This means that New Jersey subscribers should have no change in their coverage when they choose Penn for their health care.

I am currently receiving treatment at a Penn hospital. Do I need to do anything to ensure that I am covered under the new contract?

No. Your coverage is intact and this new contract will now ensure continued coverage for patients currently in treatment.  We have worked hard to ensure that there will not experience any change due to extended negotiations.

Why did Horizon take so long to reach an agreement?

Contract negotiations are complicated and often difficult, but there is no way to predict how long they will take, or even if they will reach resolution. Penn and Horizon have been working on these difficult negotiations for months, and are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that will not impact our patients' treatment.
