The Davies Lab is interested in fundamental mechanisms of cardiovascular cell and tissue biomechanics, biochemistry and molecular biophysics. Our particular interest is primarily the endothelial cell which we study in vivo and in reductionist experiments in vitro with the objective of understanding the interplay between hemodynamics (blood flow) and endothelium in cardiovascular physiology and pathology.

Research Projects

Endothelial susceptibility to the initiation of atherosclerosis associated with complex blood flow.

Studies of spatial endothelial phenotypes in vivo (swine model). Transcriptional, translational and functional cell profiles and their regulation by transcription factors, small RNAs (microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs) and epigenomic modifications (DNA methylation, acetylation and histone modifications). Profiling in vivo informs the design of reductionist experiments in vitro to identify mechanisms.

Design improvements in vascular stents.

Computational and experimental fluid dynamics. Bench top experiments to test the effect of changes in stent strut geometries upon flow patterns, and the consequences for endothelial phenotype and thrombotic risk. Aimed at modifying stent geometry to reduce late stent thrombosis.
