Penn Cardiovascular Institute

Core Research Laboratories at the Penn Cardiovascular Institute

The Penn Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) has interdisciplinary basic, translational, and clinical research core facilities available to all its faculty members. These core facilities promote translational research studies using small animal models of cardiovascular disease.

  • gene

The Penn CVI Histology and Gene Expression Core Facility

The Histology and Gene Expression Core Facility at Penn provides expert professional services for members of the Penn Cardiovascular Division. Services for non-division investigators are available on a fee-for-service basis as time permits.

The Histology and Gene Expression Core offers all histology-related services include tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization.

The Penn CVI Mouse Cardiovascular Physiology & Microsurgery Core

The Mouse Cardiovascular Physiology and Microsurgery Core facility assists principle investigators as a central resource for developing and implementing in vivo rodents (mouse and rats) models of cardiovascular disease, which provides a unique and valuable research opportunity for translational research from animal studies to humans.

This Core provides a wide variety of in vivo animal models using invasive surgical/microsurgical procedures, invasive (hemodynamic and PV loop measurements) and non-invasive ultrasound imaging for comprehensive evaluation of cardiovascular function and phenotypic profile of transgenic and knockout mice that might be difficult or time-consuming for those investigators without proper expertise, experience and equipment.

The Mouse Cardiovascular Physiology and Microsurgery Core also provides microsurgery trainings and technique assistance for faculty, staff, fellows and students whose work requires surgical manipulations. Core services and consultation are available to all Penn investigators.

The Penn CVI Mouse Echocardiogram Service

The Mouse Echocardiogram service offers real-time, in-vivo, non-invasive ultrasound imaging techniques for evaluation of cardiovascular phenotypes of transgenic and knockout mice.

A high-frequency linear transducer (30 to 40MHz) is used to perform echocardiography under light general anesthetized mice.

    Services include:

    • Evaluation of heart size and cardiovascular function in mice from E10.5 to adulthood
    • Doppler studies of vascular flow in adult mice
