Penn Cardiovascular Institute

Collaboration at the Penn Cardiovascular Institute

The best biomedical research is constantly influenced by frontline clinical experience. Many of the members of the Penn Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) are clinician-scientists, which creates a seamless integration of medical research and clinical care.

This has a two-fold effect: research is better informed by real-life clinical data, and Penn Medicine patients can quickly benefit from the latest treatments developed in Penn laboratories.

At Penn, Cardiovascular Research Informs Cardiovascular Medicine

The Penn CVI is organized into research interests that overlap into the clinical services at the Penn Heart and Vascular Center, the premiere cardiovascular disease treatment center in the Philadelphia region.

The disease-focused and integrated medical-surgical practices within the Penn Heart and Vascular Center include:

  • Heart failure and transplantation
  • Cardiac electrophysiology
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Consultative and preventive cardiology
  • Adult congenital heart disease

These nationally recognized, multidisciplinary clinical programs directly tie into and complement the CVI’s disease-focused research programs, bridging the institute’s clinical and research missions.

At Penn, Location Promotes Collaboration

Whenever possible, Penn CVI faculty members perform their cardiovascular research adjacent to other cardiovascular centers-of-excellence on the Penn medical campus. That is why Penn CVI is housed in the state-of-the-art Penn Smilow Center for Translational Research (SCTR).

The SCTR is also home to the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, both of which work closely with Penn CVI. Together, these three institutes work together to promote transformational discoveries in cardiovascular and metabolic/diabetic disease.

In addition, the Penn Heart and Vascular Center, rated as one of the best cardiology programs by US News and World Report, is located adjacent to Penn CVI, in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

Cardiovascular research programs and collaborations are also located outside the SCTR, yet still fall under the Penn CVI umbrella. These include investigators in the departments listed below. Each of these centers, institutes and departments carry a strong focus in cardiovascular research.
