Kevin Austin, Bicuspid Aortic Valve, Adventurer & Father of Two
Kevin was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, which means that instead of the normal three leaflets in the heart's aortic valve, Kevin was born with just two. This congenital heart defect left Kevin's heart unable to sufficiently pump blood through his body. At 13 years old, Kevin had heart surgery replace his aortic valve with a new one.
At 45 years old, his initial valve replacement, and he started to once again experience shortness of breath. Kevin's cardiologist recommended he go see Robert Farivar, MD, at Penn Medicine.
