Overview of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program

Innovative Care for the Unique Challenges of Grown-Up Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart conditions are different in adults than in children. Likewise, patients with congenital heart disease experience cardiac problems differently than adults with acquired heart disease. That is why Penn Medicine and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia joined forces to create the Philadelphia Adult Congenital Heart Center.

Lifelong Adult-Centered Care

The center offers:

  • A team of experts who are specially trained in the complex anatomy and heart function of adults with congenital heart disease.
  • The broad array of services necessary for the long-term complications of adult congenital heart disease.
  • A focus on education and counseling to help patients monitor their own health and deal with the non-cardiac issues that often accompany congenital heart disease.

A Medical Team with Exceptional Breadth and Depth

The Penn Medicine adult congenital heart disease team is comprised of some of the world's finest physicians and surgeons from:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Cardiology
  • Cardiovascular surgery
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Electrophysiology
  • Genetics
  • Heart failure
  • Transplantation
  • Imaging services
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Reproductive services (pre-pregnancy counseling and prenatal care)
