The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania ranks among the nation's top five research-oriented medical schools, according to the annual survey by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the 16th consecutive year that the Perelman School of Medicine has ranked as one of the top five medical schools in the United States.
Magnet® Award for Nursing
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center have achieved Magnet® status—the highest institutional honor awarded for nursing excellence—from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) was recently named one of the top 100 Hospitals® in the nation based on overall performance by Truven Health - formerly Thomson Reuters. Becker's Hospital Review named the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) one of the 50 best hospitals in America. According to the review, each of these winners puts patients' needs first, driven a variety of innovations and set the bar for high-quality care higher.
3rd in the Nation for NIH Research Grants
The Perelman School of Medicine is consistently among the top five medical schools in the country in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In the 2009 fiscal year, Penn's School of Medicine received $397.4 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers – National Cancer Institute
The Abramson Cancer Center is one of a select group of cancer centers in the country awarded the prestigious designation of Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. This status, which has been awarded to the Abramson Cancer Center continuously for the past 30 years.
Partnership for Patients – Healthcare.gov
Penn Medicine has joined the Partnership for Patients in its commitment to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care. Comprised of hospitals, providers, employers, patient advocates and the government, the partnership seeks to save lives by preventing hospital-acquired conditions and facilitating complication-free recovery. The goal is better and more sustainable health care for Americans.
LIVESTRONG™ Survivorship Center
The Abramson Cancer Center's Living Well After Cancer™ program was awarded the LIVESTRONG™ Survivorship Center of Excellence designation by the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It is the only LIVESTRONG™ Cancer Survivorship Center of Excellence in the region.
One of America's 100 "Most Wired" Hospitals
In 2008, Penn Medicine was named one of the nation's 100 "Most Wired" hospitals and health care systems by Hospitals & Health Networks, the Journal of the American Hospital Association.
The award is based on an annual survey that polls the nation's health care systems on their use of Internet technologies to connect with patients, physicians and nurses, payors, health plans and employees.
Hospital of Choice Awards – American Alliance of Healthcare Providers
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is one of America's 100 Choice Hospitals in 2009–2010 as recognized by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers. This award recognizes hospitals that go beyond their walls in pursuit of excellence and quality care, reaching out to the community's physicians and health care organizations in an effort to make their services accessible to all.
Top Cardiovascular Hospitals – Truven Health Analytics
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, part of Penn Medicine, is the only hospital in Philadelphia to be selected as one of the nation's "50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals" by Truven Health Analytics – formerly known as Thomson Reuters.
"25 Most Influential" – RT Image Magazine
For its installation of three new, state-of-the-art, high-powered magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems —a "Radiology First" for any hospital in the United States–RT Image has chosen the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as one of its "25 Most Influential" movers and shakers in the radiology industry in 2006.

Facilities designated as Blue Distinction Centers offer comprehensive care programs for adults, delivered by multidisciplinary teams with subspecialty training, and distinguished clinical expertise in treating these conditions. Penn Medicine has received designation as a Blue Distinction Center for the following services:

Breast Cancer Center of Excellence
In July of 2005, The Perelman School of Medicine was named a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence by the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program. This designation – which includes a $10 million grant – establishes Penn as one of only 14 such sites in the United States.
Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
The Bariatric Surgery Programs at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Hospital have been designated by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as Centers of Excellence. With this distinction, the Surgical Review Corporation recognizes four Penn surgeons, Dr. Noel Williams, Dr. Steven Raper, Dr. Matt Kirkland and Dr. Alan Schuricht, as well as the centers' outstanding facilities and patient care.

Gift of Life Award
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) won the 2006 Gift of Life Award from the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council (DVHC). According to the DVHC, the award was established "to recognize a hospital for excellence in family care and outstanding rates of performance in organ donation.
Modern Healthcare IT Case Study Contest 2010 (2nd Place)
This annual program recognizes healthcare IT implementation projects that have improved patient care and that also may be eligible for funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly known as the economic stimulus bill.
2011 InformationWeek 500 (Innovator Award;
80th Overall)Penn Medicine Information Services organization has been recognized for the second year in a row at the 2011 Information Week 500 Innovator Conference. At this year's event, which represents information services departments from throughout the world, Penn Medicine was recognized as the Number One (#1) organization for best innovation in the category of Customer Intimacy and 80th overall on the Information Week 500.
2010 Delaware Valley Patient Safety Award - Health Care Improvement Foundation
Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) has received the 2010 Delaware Valley Patient Safety Award from the Health Care Improvement Foundation. PPMC's winning entry detailed the ways in which the hospital's multidisciplinary team used various performance initiatives to significantly decrease surgical site infections in patients following joint replacement surgery.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Transplant Center Awards
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Transplant Center Awards have awarded the Penn Transplant Institute's Kidney Transplant program a Silver Level Award and the Heart Transplant program a Bronze Level Award. Transplant programs were evaluated based on post-transplant survival rates, transplant rates and mortality rates after patients are placed on waiting lists. Penn is the only transplant center in the region and one of a select group of programs in the nation to receive this distinction.
The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)
The Rena Rowan Breast Center at the Abramson Cancer Center and the Joan Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital have been granted a three year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation is only given to breast centers who have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
