Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders

The Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders Program evaluates and treats patients with both routine and complex disorders involving problems with muscles and nerves that coordinate the intricate movements of the alimetary tract. Diagnosis can be confirmed through tests available through the Motility-Physiology Laboratory.

This program also provides new investigational medications through clinical research programs for patients with difficult or refractory management problems.

The Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders Program provides consultative services for patients with the following disorders:

• Esophageal motility disorders, including achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasm, and other conditions that affect swallowing functions
• Gastroparesis and other disorders of gastric emptying
• Non-cardiac chest pain
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Severe constipation with no known cause
• Intestinal pseudo-obstruction
• Gastrointestinal complications from diabetes mellitus
• Anorectal disorders
