About Penn Gastroenterology

Penn's multidisciplinary approach to GI medicine provides state-of-the art care and clinical research for people with a variety of digestive, liver and pancreatic disorders.

Best Hospitals 2009-2010 - "US News & World Report"Nationally Recognized Physicians
Penn gastroenterologists of the Digestive and Liver Center have pioneered advances within their fields and bring you more options in detecting and treating disease. Experience and technology enable us to provide expert care for everyone, including people with additional medical conditions or risk factors.

U.S.News & World Report ranked Penn's digestive diseases program in the top 10 in the country and the highest in the Philadelphia region. Overall, the clinical specialties at Penn have been consistently ranked among the nation's best by U.S.News.

Additionally, Penn Medicine has been ranked one of the nation's Clinical Centers of Excellence in Gastrointestinal Disorders in the latest issue of Medical Economics. The 12 centers featured have active research protocols in diverse gastrointestinal (GI) areas and are profiles which provide physicians with a valuable tool when considering where to refer patients for diagnostic procedures and treatment of intractable, chronic GI disorders or serious disease.

Penn Medicine is the only institution ranked in the Philadelphia region and is one of only four of the ranked centers that was further highlighted in the article. Anil Rustgi, MD, chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, and David Metz, MD, associate chief of GI for Clinical Affairs, are both quoted. "We have many physician-scientists who are leaders in their fields, nationally and internationally," says Dr. Rustgi, "and we are very excited about the advances we've made in terms of diagnosis, and, we hope, in therapy."

Multidisciplinary Approaches
Penn Gastroenterology provides multidisciplinary care for digestive and liver disease. Our programs include related specialists who are integrally involved in your care, including:

  • gastroenterology, pancreatology and hepatology
  • surgery
  • oncology
  • radiation therapy
  • imaging
  • pathology

Patients benefit from the technical and research resources of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Penn Medicine at Radnor.

World-Renowned Research Programs
Clinical programs in gastroenterology are enriched through ongoing biomedical research and through the NIH-funded Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Diseases. Digestive and liver research programs aim to bring scientific advances to patient care.

The University of Pennsylvania ranks second among U.S. academic medical centers in National Institutes of Health funding, and Penn's School of Medicine was ranked third in the nation for medical schools by U.S.News & World Report. We are committed to training the future leaders of gastroenterology through education and development of our fellows.

We thank you for using Penn Gastroenterology.

Sincerely yours,
Anil Rustgi, MD
