The Nation's Best Evidence of Advanced Medicine at Work

The Ruth and Raymond Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine is now open. In July, radiation oncology was the first practice to begin seeing patients and the SurgiCentre, gastrointestinal medicine and endoscopic medicine practices opened in September.

In December 2008 and January 2009, a number of outpatient services will move into the Perelman Center and the Roberts Proton Therapy Center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.

Telemedicine Improves Patient Care at Penn

One of the most recent developments in medical technology is telemedicine. Telemedicine includes any action in which medical information is transferred between two people via an electronic medium including, but not limited to, the telephone and internet. Since 2004, the University of Pennsylvania Health System has been among the leaders in the area of telemedicine through the integration of the Penn E-lert eICUŽ.

Penn's Cancer Risk Evaluation Program

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Knowing the risk factors for breast cancer can reduce one's chance of developing it as well as increase the likelihood of early detection, which is when breast cancer is most treatable. For women with a strong family history of cancer, Penn's nationally recognized Cancer Risk Evaluation Program is specifically designed to help women better understand their level of personal risk and how to best manage it.
