Penn Contributes to Successful 2007 Heart Walk!

On Sunday, September 16, 2007, more than 500 Penn walkers participated in this year’s Start! Heart Walk—an annual event hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA). Started in 1994, the Heart Walk promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living, and serves as the AHA’s signature fundraising event.

Penn was among the largest teams represented at Citizen’s Bank Park, site of the 2007 Heart Walk for the Philadelphia region. Penn volunteers raised over $90,000 and led the cheers as nearly 4,000 participants took in words of motivation and inspiration from home plate and strode through the 5K course, which led walkers through stadium concourses and outside to surrounding areas.

Michael Parmacek, MD, chief of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and director of the Penn Cardiovascular Institute, spoke at the event, thanking everyone for raising money for such an important cause. Dr. Parmacek also encouraged those present to join the Start! movement and make a commitment to developing healthier lifestyles.

Each year at over 500 locations nationwide, one million walkers participate in the AHA’s Heart Walk. The 2007 Start! theme calls on all Americans to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking. Funds raised will help support a variety of AHA research and educational programs that aid in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
