Finding the Right Treatment for Diabetes

There are many medications and technologies available to manage diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not enough. Oral medications or insulin may be used to manage Type 2 diabetes, but Type 1 diabetics require insulin. There are a variety of oral medications that work in different parts of the body to improve blood sugars. Often people will take multiple oral medications at the same time to effectively manage their diabetes.

As for insulin, there are many types that vary in how quickly they work and how long they remain in the body. All insulin is injected into body fat with a syringe, pen or pump. Insulin pumps deliver insulin through a small catheter inserted into the fat beneath the skin. At the Penn Rodebaugh Diabetes Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, multidisciplinary teams of diabetes specialists work closely with patients to develop customized treatment plans that optimize their health and quality of life.

The Diabetes Education Center at Pennsylvania Hospital is another resource for patients. It offers classes and individual instruction for diabetes management. The Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association since 1990 for their management classes and private counseling.
