Learn How to Stay Healthy During the Cold and Flu Season
November is part of cold and flu season, the time of year when everyone seems to get sick. In order to stay healthy and avoid colds and the flu, you can follow these simple steps to keep yourself and others healthy during this time of year.
- Wash your hands.
“Hand hygiene” is one of the best ways to avoid getting the flu and viruses. Many germs get into your body through your hands so keep your hands away from your face.
Some hand washing tips:
- Wash your hands after touching something that has been handled by a lot of people (door knobs, gym equipment), after you blow your nose or if your hands seem or feel dirty.
- Wet hands in warm running water, use antibacterial soap and create a lather. Scrub the front, back, between fingers and around the wrist. Rinse.
- Use hand sanitizers.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth after coming in contact with viruses or bacteria. If you need to sneeze, sneeze into a tissue or your shoulder rather than your hands to avoid spreading germs.
- Stagnant air is a breeding ground for germs. Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate into the room.
- Avoid smoking. The ingredients in a cigarette
paralyze the cilia in your nose, which filter
out most of the germs in the air when you breathe.
- Make sure you get enough rest. Your body’s immune system can fight bacteria and viruses better when it is well rested.
- Eat right and drink plenty of fluids to keep your body in top health.
