Skin Cancer - Know Your Risk
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It can develop in anyone. Young, healthy people - of all skin colors - can develop skin cancer.
Sun exposure is considered the primary cause of all skin cancers. Other risk factors include age, complexion and genetics. The key to beating skin cancer is prevention and early detection. If left unchecked, skin cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs.

Lyme Disease: Some Things You Should Know
Did you know that as the weather gets nicer, the prevalence for Lyme disease increases? Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans from the bite of the deer tick. Most Lyme disease in the northeastern United States occurs during summer or fall, when the small nymphal ticks are prevalent, and people spend more time outdoors.
The early stage of Lyme disease is usually marked by one or more of these signs and symptoms:
- Tiredness
- Chills and fever
- Headache
- Muscle and/or joint pain
- Swollen lymph glands
- A characteristic skin rash (erythema migrans)
Early Lyme disease is highly treatable and curable with a single course of oral antibiotics. If left untreated, Lyme disease can cause neurologic complaints, including facial palsy, numbness, tingling and headaches, abnormal hearth rhythm and large-joint arthritis.
