March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and is the third-most common cancer in men and women. It is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. Early detection through colonoscopy screening is the most effective method of prevention. If identified early, colorectal cancer is 90 percent curable. The American Cancer Society recommends that every male and female schedule their first colonoscopy at age 50, although those with a family history of GI cancer should start screening at an earlier age.

Penn Gastroenterology provides the highest level of care from the initial screening to subsequent cancer treatment. The GI Cancer Risk Evaluation Program at the Abramson Cancer Center offers an integrated team of gastroenterologists, oncologists, pathologists and surgeons who are leaders in the field of gastrointestinal cancer. Convenient colonoscopy screenings are available at Penn Medicine at Radnor, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Ruth and Raymond Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
