Aim for Five a Day - Getting in those Fruits and Vegetables

How do you get in your fruit and vegetable servings every day? Learn easy ways to add fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Add it on!
Try adding vegetables to pizzas, soups and sandwiches. Broccoli, peppers and mushrooms make great pizza toppings. Tomatoes and alfalfa sprouts are great ways to add flavor to sandwiches. Add celery, carrots, cauliflower or cabbage to soups to make it a meal.

Try something new.
Never had kiwi fruit? Always wondered what fresh mango tastes like? Why not try it out? There’s more to the produce section than apples, oranges and bananas. Aim to try out new fruits three times a week. You may find something you really enjoy.

Make it easy for yourself.
Buy pre-packaged, cut and washed vegetables in the grocery store. Add some soup mix to low-fat sour cream and you’ve got yourself a healthy snack. If you’d rather pick and choose your favorite vegetables, wash and cut them as soon as you take them home. You might find it easier to eat your vegetables on the go when they are already cut up for you.

Try out new ways to eat the “same old” fruits.
Why not try grilling a banana or microwaving an apple with some cinnamon? Add mangos to your salsa and you have a new twist on an old standby. Bring out your blender, blueberries, bananas and some yogurt to make a delicious smoothie. Get whatever is on sale at the market and try out a new recipe.

However you get them in, fruits and vegetables are a good defense in fighting off illness, weight gain, heart conditions and some kinds of cancer.
