Swallowing Therapy

The Penn Center for Voice and Swallowing team has special expertise in treating swallowing disorders. Swallowing evaluations are recommended for patients who:

• Complain of difficulty or pain when swallowing liquids, food or medication.
• Suffer from frequent choking during meals.
• Have a history of acid reflux disease.
• Have Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease).
• Develop problems after sickness, surgery or changes in medication.

The Center offers complete diagnostic and treatment services for swallowing disorders including:

• Electromyography of swallowing muscles.
• Fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).
• Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing (FEESST).
• In-office transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE).
