EducationPenn Medicine’s Division of Rhinology is recognized, both nationally and internationally, as the academic leader in the subspecialty area of Rhinology. Each year the Division of Rhinology hosts a multitude of clinical observers, including practicing physicians, residents from other programs, and medical and doctoral students, who are interested in learning more in the field of rhinology. The physicians of the Rhinology Division travel extensively all over the world to teach and demonstrate surgical advances. Most recently, the Rhinology Division co-sponsored a Rhinology Course in Bodrum, Turkey to help bring advances in research and clinical work to that part of the globe. The Division of Rhinology is taking the initiative to combine cutting-edge medical and surgical advances with state-of-the-art technology to bring the best in education to the widest possible audience. CME- Accredited CoursesA natural outgrowth of the introduction of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in the U.S. by Dr. David Kennedy was the development of a medical education course to instruct other surgeons throughout the U.S., as well as other countries around the world, in this pioneering surgical procedure. Dr. Kennedy began the course in 1985 and continued the annual program when he arrived here at Penn. The course, Penn International Rhinology, which typically includes lectures, live surgery presentations, demonstration dissections, and hands-on laboratories, is considered the premier course in the specialty area of rhinology with an attendance of over 100 annually. The year 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Rhinology course, representing the longest running course in advances in management of sino-nasal disease in the country. In 2010, the annual course was expanded to include the area of endoscopic skull base surgery and was presented in cooperation with the Penn Department of Neurosurgery. In 2009 the Rhinology course was offered in conjunction with a combined meeting of four national and international rhinologic organizations as “Rhinology World 2009” - hosted in Philadelphia. For more information visit the website at www.rhinologyworld.com. Also directed by Dr. David Kennedy and typically held every two to three years, the International Update Course: Otolaryngology Underwater provides a review and update of recent advances in a variety of Otorhinolaryngology sub-specialties, to include the area of Rhinology. The Division of Rhinology offers the opportunity for several Visiting Mini Fellowships in Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) throughout the year. Practicing otolaryngologists from around the country and abroad may apply for this four-day, one-on-one clinical experience where they will spend time with Drs. David Kennedy and James Palmer during their office hours, observing in surgery and performing a cadaveric dissection. Each of these courses is offered for continuing medical education credits. Residency and Fellowship ProgramsThe Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residents spend one quarterly rotation in the Division of Rhinology in each of their four years in the program and are also given the opportunity to spend a six-month rotation in the rhinology research lab over the course of the program under the mentorship of Noam A. Cohen, MD, PhD, Lab Director, and the distinguished Rhinology Division faculty. The Division also offers a one-year fellowship for physicians who wish to pursue specialized training in the fields of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery. The Fellowship program confers two positions each year. For more information, visit Fellowship Programs: Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery.
