Hearing Aid Dispensing Program

Over the past decade, hearing aids and amplification devices have undergone an astounding technologic transformation. Hearing aids are no longer mere amplifiers intended at making everything louder, including sounds that are unwanted.

Modern hearing aids are essentially tiny systems capable of analyzing sound and manipulating it in ways to make it loud enough to be easy to hear, but not too loud that it is uncomfortable or undesirable. This amazing evolution has allowed for hearing impaired people to appreciate better communication then they ever could before. This advancement of technology has also allowed for more choices with regard to the sophistication of sound processing, listening environment options, and hearing aid style.

There are dozens of hearing aid manufacturers, each offering dozens of different devices for purchase. How do consumers decide what is best for their communicative needs? Experience counts when choosing a professional to help with such a complex, yet important decision. The audiologists at Penn Medicine keep the patient’s communication needs paramount throughout the entire process of pursuing amplification.

Amplification Assessment

Patients interested in learning about their amplification options receive an in-depth hearing aid assessment evaluation and counseling session with a Penn audiologist. This invaluable meeting is an integral part of understanding hearing loss, amplification options, differences in technology and patient prognosis with the use of a hearing aid. Following the evaluation, patients are provided with information about all of their options. Being better equipped to make an informed decision, the patient may choose to pursue a trial period with amplification at one of Penn’s facilities, or take the results and knowledge gained to a self-selected hearing aid dispensing facility.

If a hearing aid is the patient’s best choice to enhance communication, Penn audiologists have an arsenal of devices available. Many hearing aid centers provide only one manufacturer’s devices. Penn Department of Audiology works with many manufacturers to provide their patients with many options and choices.

Hearing aid evaluations and fittings are offered by experienced, highly-trained audiologists at three state-of-the-art facilities. Review hearing aid service information to learn more about beginning the process of improving your quality of life through sound.
