What to Expect After TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS)

The TORS Team led by Drs. O'Malley and Weinstein have more experience than any other TORS surgeon - in the world.

After surgery the patient should plan on:

  • Spending three to five nights in the hospital after TORS (one to two nights after neck dissection).
  • An early return to good swallowing function for almost all patients, with removal of the nose to stomach feeding tube quickly.
  • The Penn Medicine staff are focused on achieving good postoperative pain control so most patient do not have severe pain.
  • A low complication rate.

Patient Guidelines After TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS)

  • No heavy lifting for at least four weeks.
  • Return for post-operative appointment about one week after surgery.
  • Walk slowly and often, increasing walking time as able.
  • Follow the advice of the physician as to what foods and drink may be taken by mouth and how long to use the feeding tube.
  • Avoid stress.

TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS) Recovery Time

As compared to traditional open procedures, the recovery time following TransOral robotic surgery (TORS) is significantly shorter, with patients experiencing fewer side effects and returning to normal activities sooner. Patients should contact their physician with further questions about what to expect.
