A
critical care nurse arrives for her shift
and begins the night by getting report.
Next she assesses patients and uses the
information gathered to direct the start
of the shift for the physician working
with her who arrives an hour later.
The
nurse and the attending critical care physician
spend the rest of their shift responding
to alarms, tracking vital sign trends,
responding to emergencies and requests
for help, and assisting in the care of
up to 53 intensive care unit (ICU) patients
who reside at least four blocks away.
