About the Center

The Center for Human Appearance at Penn is the first ever interdisciplinary academic center that is fully dedicated to the study and treatment of appearance-related disorders and quality of life.

Our core group of specialists work in many areas of medicine including:

  • plastic surgery
  • dermatology
  • oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • ophthalmology
  • otolaryngology
  • psychology

This integrated team works cooperatively to address both the physical and psychological aspects of appearance in adults and children. Their work includes problems related to birth defects, post-traumatic and post-tumor reconstruction, and cosmetic problems of the face, body or extremities.

The Center also provides a continuing forum for the exchange of information and knowledge among physicians worldwide. We work together to enhance patient care and stimulate new treatment and research methods.

Mission Statement
"Our mission is to assist individuals to achieve the most ideal normal appearance through surgical and medical means. Psychological well being is an integral part of the process. This may mean the eradication of disease or reconstruction of deformity or cosmetic changes, bringing about rehabilitation of the body and mind."
