Residency and Fellowship Programs
Training the
World's Finest Cardiothoracic Surgeons
The accredited training program
of the Division of Cardiovascular
Surgery of the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine
attracts resident and fellowship
applicants from top-ranked
universities throughout North
America and the world.
A Comprehensive Foundation in Cardiovascular
Surgery
Penn's training program for cardiovascular and
thoracic
surgeons is among the most highly regarded
in the nation—and the world. Residents and fellows
who enter the practice of cardiovascular or thoracic
surgery at Penn's Division of Cardiovascular
Surgery have the opportunity to specialize in
all three subspecialty areas of cardiovascular
surgery—adult
cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery and
congenital heart surgery. The program has also
just been approved for the six year option directly
out of medical school leading to certification
in cardiothoracic surgery without certification
in general surgery.
"Penn
is not only a leader in the training
of residents and fellows entering
the field of cardiovascular surgery,
but has developed three-month mini
fellowships for early career cardiac
surgeons to fulfill the demand for
specialized training from Penn's
renowned faculty in heart failure
and transplantation, thoracic aortic
surgery and VAD implantation."

The foundations
of the cardiovascular surgery program include
clinical research and the practical application
of surgical technique in preparation for an active
career in cardiovascular surgery. Residents are
trained in every advanced area of surgery, including
complex aortic surgery, endovascular replacement
of the aortic valve; implantation of ventricular
assist devices for bridge to transplantation
and destination therapy, including the total
artificial heart; minimally invasive surgery
for coronary revascularization and valve replacement
and repair; robotic cardiac surgery; off-pump
and on-pump surgical revascularization and surgery
for atrial fibrillation.
Residents in the core
two-year thoracic surgery program qualify for
participation in the American Board of Thoracic
Surgery examination and certification process.
Specialized and more advanced experience in specialty
areas such as transplantation surgery, neonatal
heart surgery, and thoracic aortic reconstructive
surgery are provided in a third year senior fellowship
program.
Penn's Global Influence in Cardiovascular Surgery
In the last 50 years, the cardiovascular surgery
training program at Penn has trained many of
the nation's leaders in cardiothoracic surgery.
Former residents and fellows of the Division
of Cardiovascular Surgery are currently in
leadership positions at the University of
Pennsylvania Health System, University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Vanderbilt
University Medical Center, Stanford University
Medical Center, Northwestern University’s
Feinberg School of Medicine, Texas A&M
University Health Science Center, Long Island
Jewish Medical Center and Georgetown
