Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program
Founded in 1993, the Penn Thoracic
Aortic Surgery Program is the first
comprehensive program of its kind
in the Philadelphia region. Led
by nationally and internationally
recognized cardiovascular surgeons
Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, Alberto
Pochettino, MD, Wilson Y. Szeto, MD,
and vascular surgeons Ronald M.
Fairman, MD, and Edward Y. Woo, MD,
the program performed 393 thoracic
aortic procedures in 2007 alone.
Growth of the Penn Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program
Since 1993, the Penn Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program has grown
dramatically in scope and volume. In 2007, the hybrid/endovascular/
cardiovascular operating room at the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania was developed to perform these new technologically
advanced endovascular aortic, as well as aortic valve interventions.
For
patients receiving complicated hybrid surgeries, including percutaneous
coronary interventions, the advantages of this configuration include
fewer and smaller incisions, shorter length of stay and better patient
outcomes. A second hybrid operating room will be introduced at the
hospital within the next year.
