Heart Failure and Transplantation
Penn is a National and Regional Leader in
Adult Heart Transplantation.*
Under the leadership of
Rohinton
J. Morris, MD, and
Mariell
Jessup, MD, the Heart
Failure and Transplantation
Program at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania is
one of the most active programs
in the United States.
The total number of heart
transplant procedures performed
at the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania in the last ten years
exceeded that of all other heart
transplant programs in the region—a
trend that continued in 2007.
Quality of Life
and Survival Rates |
"Penn's
heart failure management program
has become a leading referral center
for other major medical centers in
the region with cardiac surgery programs.
Referring patients here speaks to
the trust these hospitals place in
the quality, breadth and depth of
care available at Penn."

Heart failure patients throughout the
region are drawn to Penn's Heart
Failure and Transplantation Program
by its multidisciplinary team of
cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons,
nurses, transplant and ventricular
assist device (VAD) coordinators,
social workers and specialists
in cardiac imaging, arrhythmia
management, cardiac anesthesia,
infectious disease, immunology, and
rehabilitation medicine—all dedicated
to the management of patients with
heart failure.
Survival Rates
Penn's survival rates at one month,
and one and three years post-transplant
consistently exceed national averages,
and are among the highest in the state
and the region.
