Coronary Disease

Penn surgeons have maintained a high volume of coronary surgeries by offering alternative approaches including traditional on-pump, off-pump and minimally invasive techniques.

Penn Coronary Surgery Activity, 2004 - 2007

The expected operative mortality of patients presenting at Penn offers an indication of the severity of their illness. Observed mortality at Penn demonstrates expertise yielding superior outcomes.

STS Observed — 2.0%
Penn Expected — 3.19%
Penn Observed — 1.27%
Penn O/E Ratio — 0.52

Off-Pump CABG
Minimally invasive surgical techniques like off-pump CABG (OPCABG) reduce blood loss and length of stay. In 2007, 33 percent of CABG surgeries performed at Penn were isolated off-pump procedures, far exceeding the 20.46 percent reported by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Database during the same period for OPCABG procedures at hospitals nationwide.
