Cutting Edge Brain Surgery That's Blade-Free
At Penn, our Neurosurgery Department is home to the most advanced Gamma Knife® radiosurgery available.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a
blade-free surgical option for patients
suffering from serious brain disorders.
The procedure is one of the most
precise, powerful and proven treatments
for conditions including:
- benign or
malignant brain tumors,
- blood vessel
malformations,
- skull base tumors, and
- dysfunctions such as trigeminal
neuralgia – a painful condition of the
facial nerves.
Technologically Advanced
and Clinically Safe
Requiring no incision, Gamma Knife
radiosurgery is a safe, noninvasive
treatment in which more than 200
precise radiation beams converge deep
within the brain to shrink or damage
individual abnormal cells. Alone, each
beam contains harmless doses of
radiation so surrounding tissue remains
unaffected, protecting the important
functions of the brain. Together, they
converge to deliver powerful treatment
to a single point.
An Effective, Innovative Alternative
to Traditional Brain Surgery
Gamma Knife radiosurgery lowers the
risks that can be experienced with
traditional surgery while minimizing
patient discomfort. Patients are not
given general anesthesia and remain
awake throughout the entire procedure,
all the while staying in constant audio
and visual communication with the
medical team. The treatment is usually
complete after a single procedure and
patients return home the same day.

Although outcomes vary among patients,
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is effective in
shrinking and in some cases eliminating
brain lesions, tumors, and venous
malformations. In addition, patients
who undergo treatment for movement
disorders, epilepsy or pain syndromes
such as trigeminal neuralgia will see
their symptoms resolve in the weeks
after the procedure.
A Center of Excellence and Experience
Pennsylvania Hospital is home to
the region's busiest Gamma Knife
Center. Our neurosurgeons are
ranked among the finest in the nation.
Recruited from all over the country and
the world, our physicians bring years
of experience and continual training
to a first-class health system.
This
experience, expertise and innovation are
what differentiates Penn Neurosurgery
from others in the region and why, when
it comes to serious brain disorders,
where you turn first matters most.
