Arriving at the Hospital

Below you will find information on what to expect when you arrive at the hospital on the day of surgery.

  • When you arrive at the hospital you go to the admissions area. This is located on the first floor of the hospital. Your family and friends may stay with you at this time.
  • From there you will be taken to the Day Stay Unit on the 4th floor of the Schiedt Building. Your family may accompany you to this area.
  • When your name is called, a nurse will take you to get ready for surgery. Your family may stay with you at this time.
  • You will change into a hospital gown and your belongings will be kept here until after your surgery is completed and you arrive in your hospital room.
  • You will then be escorted to the preoperative holding area. At this time, your family will go to the Surgical Family Waiting Room on the 9th floor of the Schiedt Building.
  • In the preoperative holding area, you will have an IV line placed in your arm.
  • The nurse will ask you some routine pre-operative questions.
  • You will meet with the anesthesiologist.
  • You will be given a dose of a low dose anticoagulant (Heparin). This medicine is one intervention to help prevent blood clot formation. You will also be given a dose of antibiotic. This is given as a preventative measure.
  • You will be taken to surgery on your bed or stretcher.
