Outpatient Anesthesia at the Hospital
of the University of Pennsylvania
Ambulatory, or outpatient surgery, is one of the most popular innovations in modern health care. Newer anesthetic medications and improved surgical techniques permit patients to undergo surgery and then return home later that same day to continue their recuperation and healing.
The Day Surgery Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania combines the best of these advances with the resouces of one of the country's finest inpatient facilities. The board-certified faculty anesthesiologists who direct your care are equally as comfortable caring for sicker patients and more complex surgery in the adjacent inpatient operating rooms, providing an extra margin of safety for the patient.
With the full resources of the hospital immediately available, even the most unusual or life-threatening complication can be managed with support not available in a free-standing facility.
In order to provide the most pleasant experience possible, we ask that you follow the general preoperative instructions as well as any specific instructions that you receive from the nurse who will telephone you the day prior to surgery.
Please wear comfortable clothes, leave valuables at home and arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home.
If you become ill, need to cancel surgery, have urgent questions the night before surgery or have not received a preadmission phone call, our hotline is (215) 662-6450.
