and Critical Care at Penn
The Department of Anesthesiology
and Critical Care provides anesthesia and perioperative
care for patients undergoing surgery or major
diagnostic procedures at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Penn Presbyterian
Medical Center (PPMC).
The Department physicians are also essential elements in HUP's Level One Trauma
Center, where its specialists perform resuscitation
and airway management, and provide a critical
care assessment and long-term management.

of inpatient and outpatient diagnostic procedures,

Pain Medicine Center provides
expert care for patients experiencing sudden
onset and chronic pain.
Areas of active clinical research include:
- evaluation
of new drugs and anesthetic techniques
- comparison
of traditional and alternative approaches
to pain management
- intraoperative echocardiography
- protection of vital organs
during periods of oxygen deprivation or low
blood pressure
