Withdrawal Management
Abrupt cessation of certain drugs can lead to
a withdrawal syndrome that is extremely uncomfortable
and potentially life threatening. Withdrawal
management requires hands-on medical supervision.
It includes
medications, counseling, frequent office visits, and daily telephone contact.
Depending
upon the drug involved, the entire process can take five to 21 days. The
following drugs may require withdrawal management:
- Alcohol
- Benzodiazepines (Valium, Ativan, Xanax, Klonopin)
- Barbiturates (Fiorinal, Fioricet)
- Sedative Hypnotics (Dalmane, Restoril, Halcion)
- Opiates
