Therapy and Consultations
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy involves an open discussion, between the patient and the therapist,
about the fears, concerns, and issues surrounding addiction. The goal of the
individual therapy is to equip the individual with the knowledge that is necessary
to make informed lifestyle decisions.
Group Therapy
Group therapy usually involves a small group of five to 10 people who meet
on a weekly basis for at least 90 minutes. Group therapy relies on the premise
that discussion of issues by people with the same problem benefits the individual
and the group as a whole. Group sessions are facilitated by an addiction
medicine professional and are available for men, women, and their significant
others.
Couples Therapy
Relationships are significantly impacted by addiction and are often the cause
of relapse. Couples therapy allows both individuals the opportunity to discuss
issues related to the addiction with a third party, who is able to understand
and appreciate both views. The addiction medicine specialist can “interpret” and “filter” the
messages so that both parties have a greater appreciation for one another.
Family Therapy
Family therapy provides family members with an avenue to express their concerns.
It also provides a forum for information to be shared at the same time so
that everyone hears the same message.
Consultations
All patients undergo a personal consultation. The goal of the initial consultation
is to determine the nature and extent of the problem. The need for ongoing
treatment and the available treatment options are also discussed at length.
